Dry needling is a widely used technique in physical therapy known for its powerful benefits—like easing pain, boosting strength and flexibility, and helping muscles function more effectively. The process involves inserting a very fine, solid needle (about the width of two human hairs—much thinner than those used for injections or blood draws) directly into tight or sensitive areas of muscle, known as trigger points.
This often causes a brief muscle twitch or a mild, dull ache that fades quickly. That tiny reaction is actually a good sign—it means the muscle is releasing, which can lead to noticeable relief, better range of motion, and even increased strength. Sometimes, specialists enhance the effects by adding gentle electrical stimulation to speed up and deepen the muscle’s response.
During your first evaluation, your specialist will talk with you about whether dry needling is a good fit for your treatment plan. Since not everyone is comfortable with needles, it’s totally okay if it’s not the right choice for you—your specialist will work with you to find the best approach for your comfort and recovery.
